Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC gives us new characters to play with months after the game has released – with a total of six new fighters on the way.
First down (or up?) the pipe is Piranha Plant, who is free for everyone who bought the game ahead of January 31st, appearing in the game alongside Smash Bros update 2.0.
After that, we have the Fighters Pass to look forward to – featuring another five characters that will be added to the game by February 2020.

Until all the DLC arrives there are plenty of other Smash Bros Ultimate characters to unlock, and once you have them, our Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tier List can help you decide who to play as. We also have some Super Smash Bros Ultimate tips if you want to brush up on the essentials.
How to get the Piranha Plant code in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Piranha Plant is available free for everyone who buys Super Smash Bros Ultimate before the end of January 2019.
However, purchasing the game isn’t enough. Whether you buy it from retail or digitally from the eShop, you have to perform extra steps to get the Piranha Plant code – specifically claiming your Gold Points from the Switch’s menu screen.
If you bought Super Smash Bros Ultimate on the eShop then your points are claimed automatically – your Piranha Plant code will be automatically emailed to the address registered with your Nintendo Account.
If you bought Super Smash Bros Ultimate physically you have to first insert the cartridge, select the game icon on the Switch’s game menu, press the + (plus) button.
Next, highlight ‘My Nintendo Rewards Programme’ at the bottom, select ‘Earn Points (game card version only) and select the Nintendo Account you want the Gold Points to be redeemed to.
Once you have claimed your Gold Points check the email address your Nintendo Account is assigned to. For us, the email header was ‘Your Piranha Plant Fighter code is here!’ and looked like this:
Note the code may take up to 10 business days to arrive, Nintendo says – and be sure to check your junk folders in case it slipped through the net (on Gmail, check the ‘Promotions’ tab as well).
If the Piranha Plant code still hasn’t arrived, contact Nintendo directly.
Once you have the Piranha Plant code, you can stop panicking – the code itself doesn’t expire until June 30th, so as long as you have one in your possession by the end of January, you can rest easy.
To redeem the Piranha Plant code, go to the eShop then ‘Redeem Code’ at the bottom, and enter the code.
Then, when you update Super Smash Bros Ultimate to version 2.0, Piranha Plant will be unlocked automatically.
If you miss out on the Piranha Plant code then you can purchase it as paid DLC from February 2019. The price is currently unknown, and it won’t be part of the Fighters Pass.
What else do we know about Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC?
Before the game’s release, series director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed there would be post-release DLC for Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
There will be five sets for £5.59 / $5.99 each for each set, with each set adding a Fighter, a Stage and multiple music tracks – and no Echo Fighters.
The first DLC fighter has been confirmed as Joker from Persona 5:
You can also get all five as part of the Fighters Pass for £22.49 / $24.99, which offers a bonus Mii Swordfighter outfit based on Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
All five DLC characters will be released by February 2020.
This list does not include Piranha Plant, which is free DLC if Smash Bros is purchased and bought by January 31st, and then made available in February 2019. If you miss out, it’ll then be available as paid DLC.
