Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Minnesota Storm) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on July 6, 2017.

Last weekend, Zillmer posted a 3-1 record at the Lubomir Ivanovic Gedza Memorial International held in Kragujevac, Serbia, to claim a bronze medal in Greco-Roman action.

Zillmer opened the competition with wins over Janko Ivetic of Serbia and 2017 Asian Junior silver medalist Amirmohammad Noroozipasand of Iran to advance to the semifinals. He dropped a tight 2-0 bout to 2013 World University bronze medalist Mikheil Kajaia of Serbia to fall into the bronze medal match where he pinned returning Gedza International champion Stjepan Lavric of Croatia in 5:25 to cement the bronze.

While primarily training Greco-Roman since graduating college two years ago, Zillmer qualified for the U.S. National Team in both Greco-Roman and freestyle for 2017. He finished as the World Team Trials runner-up in Greco-Roman at 98 kg/215 lbs. and in third place at the freestyle World Team Trials at 97 kg/213 lbs. Continue reading at www.teamusa.org
