Criterion Games, the creator of Burnout, is making Firestorm, Battlefield 5’s battle royale mode.

It sort of makes sense – the studio is well known for its expertise in vehicle gameplay, and Firestorm’s map will feature plenty of vehicles to play around with.

New details of the 64-player mode shared by publisher EA last night will sound largely familiar to anyone who’s played a battle royale game before. There’s a shrinking battlefield – surrounded by fire – and you’ll be fighting to become the last alive.

EA calls the addition of Battlefield vehicles the “game-changing” element here, although there’s also mention of securing Conquest mode-like objectives to gain better gear, and the ability to “transform the map” with the series’ destruction mechanic.

As detailed previously, Firestorm will feature the series’ largest map to date and you’ll be fighting as one of 16 four-player squads.

There’s still no word, however, on when Firestorm will see release. A pre-order bonus for Battlefield 5 includes Firestorm-themed items, although they will be usable across the full game, EA says – so whether the mode arrives alongside the game in November or not you’ll be able to use them.

Battlefield rival Call of Duty showed a trailer for its own battle royale mode last night – which also has vehicles. Named Blackout, it currently has 80-player matches.
