Commission clears Deutsche Bahn to buy UK’s Arriva

DB must sell off Arriva’s German business.

The European Commission has today approved Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s rail operator, to acquire Arriva plc, a UK rail and bus service operator.

The Commission approved the acquisition on condition that Deutsche Bahn sells off Arriva Deutschland, the company’s subsidiary in Germany.

Deutsche Bahn provides rail and bus passenger transport services, freight services, logistics services and operates railway infrastructure and stations in Germany and a number of other European countries. Arriva has activities in in the UK, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden.

The Commission investigated the effect of the acquisition in rail and bus passenger and rail freight markets and identified some concerns on the German rail and bus markets. These concerns will be fully addressed by Deutsche Bahn divesting Arriva Deutschland.
