BENTON, AR — A charter bus carrying a youth football team from Tennessee drove off Interstate 30 near Benton and overturned, leaving one child dead and dozens of other people hurt. The bus was traveling from Texas to Memphis, Tennessee, around 2:45 a.m. Monday when it crashed about 25 miles southwest of Little Rock, Arkansas State Police said.

Most of the injured were children and they were rushed to area hospitals. Details about the extent of their injuries weren’t immediately released. Video at the scene showed a bus with major damage lying on its side in an embankment. The exit has a sharp curve, according to The Associated Press.

State troopers were questioning the driver, AP reported.

WMC reported the football team, consisting of elementary-aged kids, was from the Orange Mound Youth Association and the youths had just played a tournament in Dallas over the weekend. Orange Mound is a historically black neighborhood in southeast Memphis.

Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock told AP it had received 24 patients and that all were in stable condition.
